Give Back, Gain Skills, and Connect: Volunteer at Your Library!

Whether you are looking to build your resume, complete community service hours, or simply share your love for books and community, the public library has a place for you. We welcome both teens (ages 14+) and adults to join our volunteer team.

Why Volunteer?

  • For Teens (14+): Earn high school community service hours, boost your college or job applications, and gain real-world experience in a relaxed, supportive environment.
  • For Adults: Share your professional skills, stay active, meet neighbors who share your interests, and directly support lifelong learning in your community.

What You Might Do From helping keep our shelves in perfect order to assisting with community events or youth programs, our volunteers form the backbone of what we do.

Our goal is to find a meaningful spot for every person who applies. Please note that while we strive to place everyone, official volunteer opportunities are limited based on our current library needs.

Ready to join us? Fill out our quick 5-minute application today to tell us about your availability and interests. We will review your application and match you with a role as soon as an opening becomes available.

Support Your Library: Volunteer with the Friends!

The Friends of the Chatham Area Public Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. Our sole purpose is to support the Chatham Area Public Library’s collections, services, programs, spaces, and staff.

You do not need to be an official member of the Friends organization to volunteer with us—anyone is welcome to join the fun and give back to our community!

How You Can Get Involved

We have a variety of volunteer activities to match your interests and schedule:

  • Annual Book Sales: Help sort, organize, and sell donated books at our major sales.

  • March Murder Mystery Fundraiser: Show off your acting chops and help bring our annual interactive fundraiser to life.

  • The Friends Board: Share your leadership skills and help steer the future of our organization by serving on the board.

  • Special Events: Lend a hand at various Friends-sponsored library events throughout the year.

However, we still encourage you to fill out our online application! We keep all applications on file for one year. If a shift opens up, we will contact you to see if you are still interested. In the meantime, we hope you'll stop by the shop soon as a visitor!
